The Fall/Winter 2019 Issue of The Daylily Pioneer Is Now Available!
I am delighted to announce that the 2019 Fall/Winter digital issue of the Region 1 Daylily Pioneer is now ready for viewing. On your behalf, I'd like to thank and congratulate our Editor Kathleen Lamb for a super issue. Kathleen sent it to Region 1 members by e-mail on Friday, November 11th. Hearty Congratulations are in Order!
We have just learned that Region One hybridizer Nan Ripley (Walkabout Gardens, IA) has received the 2019 Stout Silver Award for her introduction 'Scarlet Pimpernel' (2006). This is the highest award that a cultivar may receive from the American Hemerocallis Society, and only one such Medal is awarded each year. Derived from the cross 'Ruby Spider' x 'Royal Celebration', this tetraploid cultivar has 10-inch blooms, is 35-inches tall, and exhibits rebloom. Its previous awards were: AM 2016, HM 2013, and NRS 2013. On behalf of all Region One members, many congratulations, Nan!

I'd also like to congratulate Karol Emmerich (Springwood Gardens, MN) and Steve Horan. Earlier this summer, Karol was awarded the 2019 Bertrand Farr Silver Medal. Established in 1950 and named for an early daylily nurseryman, this medal is a distinquished honor for members who have attained outstanding results in the field of daylily hybridizing. Our Regional Publicity Director Steve Horan has totted up the ballots, and here are the winners:

Some interesting tidbits that Steve also provided about the Region One vote tally this year are: 

* Participation dropped from 71 in 2018 to 34 in 2019. Steve feels that this might be due to the late bloom season, since only 30% were in bloom by the time of our Summer Regional. As a result, many did not turn in ballots during the Regional.  This is the biggest source of ballots.

* 68 write-ins, two of which received more than 2 votes.

* 26 cultivars on the ballot did not receive one vote.

* Top write-in was 'Gift of Lift' with 4 tallies.

"Fireworks in the Gardens" in 2019
The 2019 AHS Region One Meeting, organized by members of the Nebraska Daylily Society (NDS) took place on July 5-7th, in Omaha, Nebraska. Guest speakers were hybridizers Charles and Heidi Douglas of Browns Ferry Gardens of Georgetown, SC. Close to 100 daylily enthusiasts attended the meeting, and four large tour gardens and five lovely open gardens were visited. Three tour gardens and all of the open gardens belonged to hybridizers, so in addition to seeing the latest and greatest well-known daylilies, attendees met several “new to you” daylily introductions and seedlings from metro-area hybridizers. To supplement all the beautiful daylilies in the four tour gardens, NDS gave each tour garden funds to purchase a collection of daylily club plants from the hybridizer of their choice (to be auctioned off during a future NDS meeting). The meeting was a huge success. More information about the event as well as photos will be posted in the next few days. Many thanks and congratulations to the NDS organizers!

As host Val Hoefer summarized, "The Regional in Omaha this summer was great fun.  It is always wonderful to see fellow daylily lovers to enjoy the gardens with.  With registration behind us on Friday afternoon, many people were able to visit most of the open gardens that day with most of them not being too far apart. In the evening, a fabulous meal was served and the day was topped off with a great auction. The featured plants were from Heidi and Charles Douglas and Phil Korth.  Heidi can always make a joke and get everyone in a great mood to bid on the auction plants.  Everyone had a great time.  

On Saturday morning, the two buses took off for the featured gardens of Nancy Lee Anderson, Phyllis McIntosh, Tom and Mary Keast, and Rita and Lyle Kahnk.  Nancy's garden was a delight with all her collections of critters and unusal garden art.  Her many different types of trees, schrubs, roses and grasses were very pleasing to the eye.  The ice cream was the best part!  Phyllis's garden was so full of daylilies you didn't know where to start!  She really knows how to grow daylilies because they were all such great specimens.  Yes, Phyllis, we were not disappointed.  I almost forgot the most fun getting to your garden was the great Ollie the Trolley ride everyone was invited to ride.  Some attendees wanted to do the walking so they could stretch their legs and get hungry for the snacks.  Tom & Mary's garden was so colorful, it made your eyes glaze over.  They have a lot of huge mature clumps that make for a great display.   Eating lunch was a great treat and everyone had time to enjoy the daylilies and the meal.  Rita & Lyle's garden by the lake was so calming and a great way to end the tour.  Her daylilies were also great clumps - must be the roots are so close to the water.   

The day was finished off with a great presentation from Charles and Heidi Douglas.  They  made it very educational for everyone by telling us how their hybriding is done to the growing of the seeds and shipping out orders.  They finished off the program by teasing everyone with pictures of their future intros."

Of course, one cannot conclude one Regional Meeting without - no pun intended - looking forward to the next. And so it was that the Cedar Valley Iris & Daylily Society gang caught everyone's attention by donning spectacles and inviting everyone to the 2020 Regional in Cedar Rapids on July 10-12. The theme, as one can tell from the above photos, is "20/20 A Perfect Daylily Vision". (You know, I hate when I make a spectacle of myself, but on this occasion it seemed to be for a worthy cause! I'm hiding third from the left!)

Invitation to Region One Hybridizers
As mentioned above, the Cedar Valley Iris & Daylily Society will be hosting the 2020 Regional in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We will have places to display registered guest plants and also seedlings being considered for Junior Citation awards. We would be delighted to display your plants. The gardens available for displaying guest plants will be the gardens of Shelly & Darrin Lett and Sue & Dave Kramer. For those of you who would like to have your introductions and seedlings on display for the 2020 Regional, we would like to receive the plants this spring so they will be well established for the 2020 bloom season. The NDSU Historic Daylily Display Garden Needs Your Help! - (May 2019)
Greetings from North Dakota! I am Lisa Schmidt from the Central North Dakota Daylily Society and am writing to request your help.  I am working with Barb Laschkewitsch from NDSU, who took over the care of the NDSU Historic Daylily Display Garden in Fargo after Bryce Farnsworth passed away last year. We are hoping your clubs can help find some historic daylilies for this garden, as many have been lost over the years.  Barb has all these nice display labels that could be reused if we could find the plants.  This is being done in preparation for Bryce Farnsworth's memorial which will be held on September 5th, 2019, at the Garden.  We are inviting all of you to attend this memorial and view the gardens, as they also have test gardens for other annuals and perennials which are very nice viewing.

Update from Lisa Schmidt on Donations of Daylilies to the NDSU Historic Display Garden (July 29, 2019)

A Big North Dakota Thank You to all the people who donated historic daylilies.  We were able to bring 75 plants to the NDSU Historic Garden.  Several people even said they want to donate more plants later, so maybe we will make this an annual thing to bring the donations to the Regional meeting.

Barb Laschkewitsch, from NDSU, has created a Facebook page ‘NDSU Historic Daylily Display Garden’ to post pictures from the garden. Barb thinks some of the plants may be mislabeled and will post pictures to Facebook for help confirming or identifying those plants. There is a link to the NDSU plant sciences website on our Region One website where the list of the current plants in the garden and map is located.  The Replacement list for labels will be put on the NDSU website this fall once it is updated.  The NDSU Plant Sciences web page is:   https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/plantsciences/research/gardens/areas

Please take a trip up to Fargo North Dakota sometime to enjoy this beautiful garden.  Thank you again for all your help donating to this amazing garden.  

How Did NDSU's AHS Display Garden Get Started?
Region One is proud to have within its boundaries a modern and historic AHS daylily Display Garden on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. How this garden came into being is a fascinating story that is told in two articles authored by Mary Baker (Region One Historic Daylily Garden Liaison), Karen Schock (former Central North Dakota Daylily Society President), and Janice Dehod (Canadian Prairie Daylily Society President, Manitoba). Region One now has its Own Blog
Many thanks go to Mary Baker (NDS) for setting up a Region One blogsite. This site, which can be accessed by clicking here, could be used by Region One members for many purposes, including publicizing regional and club meetings, sharing information about daylily cultivars, hybridizing and cultivation, and attracting new members to our clubs. Since her first blog in August 2018, Mary provided the latest information about "Fireworks in the Gardens", our 2019 Summer Regional Meeting that was held on July 5-7th. The Daylily Community Loses CVIDS Charter Member Gerald Hobbs
It is with the utmost sadness that I must inform you that our good friend Gerald Hobbs passed away on May 18th, 2019, at the age of 90. On May 21st, the Hobbs family met with friends at the King-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, where a Celebration of Life was held. Gerald was buried in Oakland Cemetery. His obituary can be accessed here. A memorial has been established in his memory, and online condolences may be left at: www.kinglynk.com.

In recent years, daylily cultivation played a major part in Gerald’s life. He was a charter member of the Cedar Valley Iris & Daylily Society, which he helped found in 1990. Gerald will be greatly missed not only by CVIDS members but also by daylily enthusiasts in the Midwest and nationwide. He was a prolific and gifted daylily hybridizer, registering over 50 new varieties that can be viewed at the American Hemerocallis Daylily Database. A wonderful and kind gentleman, Gerald was always happy to share his expertise with others. On behalf of CVIDS, I extend our sincere condolences to the Hobbs Family.

NDS Releases Vol. XXXIII of its Annual Yearbooks
To help you get through the arctic cold that is currently gripping the Midwest, how about thumbing through a book full of beautiful daylily photos and learning what one of our Region One clubs has been up to recently? Every January for many years now, the Nebraska Daylily Society has been assembling a yearbook that includes club news from the previous year, the club calendar for the current year, and lots of helpful articles and useful information.
